      Scholars Award
      : This is a scholarship award from the Bill &
      Melinda Gates Foundation that assists traditionally underrepresented
      ethnic groups in breaking down educational barriers in areas of study
      such as education, math, engineering, computer science, library science,
      and public health. The amount of award varies depending upon the
      candidate’s financial need, tuition costs, living expenses, book fees,
      and other factors. The requirements for candidacy are:
      • Nominated by a teacher
        or faculty member
      • American Indian/Alaska
        Native, African American, American or Hispanic American, or Asian Pacific
        Islander ethnic groups
      • US citizen or permanent
        legal resident
      • Cumulative GPA of
        3.3 on a 4.00 scale (unweighted) at time of nomination
      • Students must begin
        study in the Fall semester at a U.S. accredited college or university
        as full-time, degree seeking freshmen
      • Have worked extensively
        in community service, extracurricular or other activities and demonstrated
        great leadership ability
      • Meet the Federal
        Pell Grant eligibility criteria.
      • Have all three required
        forms (Nominee Personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender
        Form) completed and submitted by the deadline of December 31, 2007

    • Harry S. Truman
      Scholarship Award:
      This award offered through the Harry S. Truman
      Scholarship Foundation focuses on providing full financial funding to
      candidates who are seeking to attend graduate school in public service
      areas. The goal is to help undergraduates, who are dedicated to
      creating change in our society, continue onto graduate study, fellowship
      opportunities, and leadership seminars. The award is $30,000 annually.
      The requirements for the scholarship are:
      • At the time of application,
        a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree with junior-level
        academic standing
      • Or, have senior-level
        standing in the third year of college enrollment
      • Or, are a senior
        in college and a resident of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, or a Pacific
        Island.
      • Committed to a career
        in public service
      • Is in the upper
        25th percentile of his or her class
      • US citizen or US
        national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana
        Islands.
